- One wheel producing much more brake dust
- A burning smell after driving

- One wheel running much hotter than the others
Replacing pads alone in that situation only resets the wear clock. The caliper or hardware problem has to be corrected, or the new pads will wear out the same way.
New Pads Need a Good Surface to Bed In Properly
New brake pads need to establish an even contact pattern with the rotor. That bedding process helps the brake system develop consistent friction and pedal feel.
A badly grooved or uneven rotor makes that harder. The new pad initially contacts only the high areas, which can reduce braking consistency until the surfaces wear together. In some cases, that poor contact creates noise or uneven deposits.
That is why we look at the rotor's overall condition instead of only whether it is technically thick enough. A rotor can pass the thickness measurement and still be a poor surface for a new set of pads.
Good Rotors Can Save You Money Without Cutting Corners
If the rotors are straight, above specification, free of serious rust or heat damage, and have a usable surface, there is nothing wrong with replacing the pads and keeping the rotors.
Regular maintenance makes that more likely because the brakes get checked before the pads wear down to metal and destroy the rotor surface. Waiting until the brakes are grinding often turns what could have been a pad service into pads and rotors.
